The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team lost Friday’s match in a heartbreaking fashion to No. 2 North Carolina 4-3, but there was no time to sulk, as No. 15 Virginia came to play on Sunday for what would be the Hokies' Senior Day.

Just like their last game against the Tar Heels, the Hokies opened down 1-0 after doubles play. Despite the win by the duo of Raluca Mita, one of the five seniors celebrating Senior Day, and sophomore Caroline Daxhelet, the Hokies lost the other two games.

Mita continued going out on top though, as she tied the game at one by winning her singles game 6-0 and 6-3. The Cavaliers answered, however, winning the match on court one to take a 2-1 lead.

The four games left were all around the same point in play. Three of them saw Virginia take the first set of each game. The Hokies had to fight back to even have a chance. Tech did just that and rallied to win the second set of each game. However, having to come back to win the middle set proved too much as the Cavaliers went on to win the last of all the games’ sets and the match overall.

The final score was 6-1 as Virginia Tech closed its season at home. For the Hokies, this game further proves the strength of the ACC, which has six teams in the ITA’s top 25 and four in the top 10.

Tech has battled well against this tough competition, picking up wins against then No. 6 Duke and No. 16 Georgia Tech while keeping it close even when it loses. This hard play will only better the Hokies going forward.

The team will look to use this experience as it travels to play in South Bend against Notre Dame this Friday at 3:30 p.m.
