Satchel Pierce set to transfer from Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech Hokies forward Satchel Pierce (21) dunks on Miami forward Ivan Cruz Uceda (33) during Virginia Tech's March 7, 2015 meeting with the Miami Hurricanes. Pierce played the majority of the minutes in the frontcourt after Joey van Zegeren left the program.

Satchel Pierce announced that he has elected to transfer from Virginia Tech. The big man had originally committed to Marquette but decided to follow newly hired coach Buzz Williams to Blacksburg. Pierce will now be on the move once again.

The 7-foot forward broke the news on Twitter. He sent out a message thanking the Hokie Nation for its support, while mentioning that he remains unsure of where he will go next.

Pierce, who saw a decline in on-court action, averaged 1.6 points and 1.3 rebounds in 6.2 minutes per game this past season. The rising junior will likely try to find somewhere where he will receive more playing time since Virginia Tech often plays a small-ball lineup.

The 7-footer’s arguably best game as a sophomore came against Northwestern, in which he netted six points and grabbed seven rebounds in an overtime loss. Pierce also had a strong outing against Duke and its big man Jahlil Okafor in 2015. In the 31 minutes during which he played, he recorded eight points, two rebounds and two blocks.
