Virginia Tech's new indoor practice facility is historic

Virginia Tech’s new athletic practice facility is getting its last touch-ups, and with a completion date of July 1, the long-awaited and quickly constructed additions are historic.

The original desire rose in 1998 from Tom Gabbard, senior associate athletics director of facilities and operations. Although it was a good plan, add-ons to the already existing field were put on hold for many pressing needs.

However, in 2014 the desire again rose, and the 12-month plans were drawn up.

Led by Project Manager John Angle, the now-indoor practice facility is more than Gabbard and Virginia Tech could have ever hoped for.

“What we thought we wanted in 1998, and what we got in 2015, is the difference between Volkswagen and Cadillac,” Gabbard said.

Containing 92,000 square feet of turf and a ceiling over 86 feet high, Virginia Tech now has the largest facility of its kind in the country.

"The ceiling will be especially key for punting," Head Football Coach Frank Beamer said. "The punting team could kick in here, regardless of weather.”

Another innovative feature, the widely spaced beams, will eliminate the pass catchers’ fear of injury from running into them.

Sitting directly next to Lane Stadium, this indoor facility has the intention of serving multiple sports at Tech for practices and conditioning.

The Hokies look forward to utilizing this new unique facility, beginning with football practice this summer.
