Several undrafted Hokies looking to turn their NFL dreams into reality

After Virginia Tech extended its streak of having a player drafted to the National Football League to 22 years, some former players who went undrafted were left looking for a team.

Whereas two players were selected in 2015, safety Kyshoen Jarrett, chosen by the Washington Redskins, and offensive tackle Laurence Gibson, headed to play for the Dallas Cowboys, Virginia Tech had six additional players hoping to try out for a team and eventually sign with an organization.

Center David Wang will join his brother and fellow Hokie alum, Ed Wang, in the NFL, as he signed with the St. Louis Rams on Wednesday, May 13, 2015.

The 6-foot-1, 303-pound prospect worked out with the Arizona Cardinals earlier in the week and will now be behind Rams’ starter Tim Barnes.

Fellow offensive line member Caleb Farris earned a tryout with the Indianapolis Colts. Farris, 6-foot and 307-pounds, had several conversations pre-draft with the Colts and will now try to prove that they were right in their evaluation of him.

A member of the dominant defensive backfield that roamed for the Hokies the last few seasons alongside Jarrett, safety Detrick Bonner has received a workout with the Carolina Panthers and will be a part of the rookie tryout roster. Bonner, who has been nursing a recurring, nagging foot injury, will likely sign with a team once healthy.

Two Virginia Tech linebackers, Chase Williams and Derek Di Nardo, both have yet to sign with a team. While Di Nardo hasn’t had any news arise, the New York Jets brought Williams into their facility and will work him out for the upcoming weeks.

Wide receiver Willie Byrn hasn’t cinched a workout/tryout with any team. The former walk-on will have to prove himself once again, as he did during his time in Blacksburg.

While Jarrett has signed his rookie contract and Gibson’s agent negotiates his, watch out for these additional Hokies as they strive to make the most of their respective chances.
